With assessment of 13 December 1982, the RKU Universitäts- und Rehabilitationskliniken Ulm were included with 224 permanent beds in the "Maximum care and special function" performance level of the Baden-Wuerttemberg consumption plan II. From the established beds, 157 belong to Orthopaedics and 67 to Neurology. Up to 50 beds of the orthopaedic permanent beds are dedicated to paraplegic patients to be cared for on a supra-regional level. 8 of the 224 beds are interdisciplinarily reserved for intensive care (5 for orthopaedics, 3 for neurology).
Medical rehabilitation
The Baden-Wuerttemberg regional pensions office consented in its letter dated 28 August 1985 to execute reconvalescence activities in the RKU. On 12 November 1985, also the federal insurance institution for employees allowed the petition on executing reconvalescence actitivities with reference to the indication groups 4 and 9a. A care contract in accordance with § 111 pos. 3 SGB V with the insurance federations was conducted.
As agreed on with the cost units, reconvalescence activities were extended to a total of 56 beds on 1 January 1999.
In the meantime, arrangements with the cost units were made concerning the execution of day-care reconvalescence measures, hospitalised further treatment as initiated by the professional associations as well as extended outpatient psychotherapeutic treatment.
Medical-professional rehabilitation
Following opening of this unit in October 1984, 80 treatment places were available due to the preliminary conception which was agreed on in cooperation with the cost units. This conception was modified in 1987, the professional unit then being allocated 115 treatment places. In the course of 1988, the inevitable plans, spatial adaptions and furnishings were implemented. Above described structure had to be brought into line with market requirements in 1997/1998.
During the past years, the department's service portfolio was enhanced by hospitalised and outpatient stress testing measures. Since September 1998, the department has been able to offer youths a 3-year office clerk education and commercial training is possible since September 1999.
