Company type
The RKU - Universitäts- und Rehabilitationskliniken Ulm have been run as non-commercial private limited company (gGmbH) from the start. The city of Ulm and the foundation Rehabilitation Heidelberg owned 50% of the shares each.
When the foundation backed off from the sponsoring company in 1987, the city of Ulm approached diverse private clinic providers, i.a. the Sana Kliniken-GmbH in Munich, with the query which prerequisites they would require for becoming financially intererested in the GmbH.
The Ulm city council decided in favour of Sana as this group was ready at the same time to act as equal fellow partner and thus provide the RKU management.
The respective arrangements with Sana as well as an increase of the capital stock from DM 50,000 to DM 1.0 m were implemented in July 1987.
The Sana Kliniken-Gesellschaft mbH is an association which is carried by the majority of the private health insurances, aiming at contributing to an on-demand clinic portfolio, adding to maintaining the diversity of clinic carriers and exemplarily implementing economic industrial management in particular.
In order to hedge RKU business policy orientation to university standard including the components maximum care, science and research also on associate level, Ulm university addressed the former RKU associates in 1999, asking them for their allowance to purchase RKU shares. This concern was additionally backed by Rehabilitation Medicine becoming more of an issue in scientific consideration in future.
Following consent of the general assembly, the city of Ulm assigned half of its former shares to the Ulm University Clinic in December 1999. Already on 1 January 1999, the University Clinic started to operate the orthopaedic outpatient department of the RKU.
In 2003, the city of Ulm sold all further shares to the University clinic as well.
In 2006 finally, the clinic was renamed: from Ulm Rehabilitation Clinic to RKU - University and Rehabilitation Clinics Ulm.
