Clinic for Anaesthesiology, Intensive Care and Analgesic Therapy

Clinical research

The Anaesthesiology, Intensive Medicine and Anagesic Therapy Clinic does its scientific work and research both, in cooperation with other RKU departments and on its own account. We focus our research projects on autohaemotherapy, the different regional anaesthetic methods and the non-invasive mask-driven artificial respiration (home respiration).

As far as autohaemotherapy is concerned, we developed the concept autologous plasma donation for orthopaedic surgery (TEP on hip and knee), for example, which has become a standard treatment method at our clinic and which does entirely without pre-operative erythrocyte donation.

In-house research on the methods of peripheral regional anaesthesia led to the development of the brachial plexus vertical subclavicular block (VIB) according to Mehrkens, Geiger and Kilka. This is an easy-to-learn, regional anaesthetic technique, applicable to arm surgery on or near the ellbow, the hand and the lower part of the upper arm.
