Neuromuscular diseases
The RKU collaborates with the University's Neuromuscular Outpatient Ward to treat all cases of neuromuscular disease, including neuropathies, muscular dystrophies and metabolic myopathies to myosites, myotoniae, dyspotassemic paralyses and myasthenias. Diagnostics cover a laboratory, electrophysiology, muscular metabolism examinations, imaging, and muscle/nerve biopsies (cooperating with the orthopaedics and neurosurgical clinics).
In 1999, a muscle laboratory was established. Special surgery on neuromuscular patients (suffering from contractures or scoliosis, for example) is carried out by the RKU's Orthopaedic Clinic. In vitro analyses of myotonies and periodic paralyses are performed by the Applied Physiology Dept. of Ulm University. To improve the standard of rehabilitation treatment given to neuromuscular patients, the RKU established a team of physiotherapists.
