Anaesthesia

The clinic for Anaesthesiology and Intensive Medicine carries out scientific work and research in co-operation with the other departments of the RKU, as well as on its own. The main priorities of our research projects are situated in the field of methods concerning the use of the patients' own blood, the different methods for regional anaesthetics and the Liquor filtration and non-invasive mask respiration (home respiration).

In the field of blood donations by the patient a concept for plasma donation was developed for orthopaedic operations (operations of hips and knees), which is used as a routine in our hospital and which can do entirely without the donation of Erythrocytes before an operation.

Research in the field of regional block anaesthesia in our hospital has led to the develpment of the vertical infraclavicular block anaesthesia of the Plexus brachialis according to Mehrkens, Geiger and Kilka. This is a method of regional anaesthesia of the arm that is easy to learn and that is used for operations in the area of the elbow and the hand, as well as in the area of the lower half of the upper arm.
